Engaging Communities in Education
• Former Assemblywoman Wilma Chan (D-Oakland, District 16) is an outspoken advocate on behalf of California children and their families. Her legislative priorities included health care, senior services, early childhood education, environmental health and sustainable economic development. She has ‘adopted’ Fruitvale Elementary School in Oakland and has encouraged local businesses and community organizations to actively involve themselves in Oakland schools through her “Adopt-A-School” partnership.

“Spice Up Your Sessions”
Led by Joan Green
Feeling stuck with the routine of your sessions? This workshop offers a collection of engaging games and activities to help “spice things up.” Tutors will learn how to utilize educational manipulatives and fun activities collected in this toolbox for learning.
• Joan Green has been a Reading Specialist and Language Development teacher in San Francisco and on the Peninsula for many years. She has taught ESL, Reading, and Spanish in a variety of settings. She holds an MA in Education with credentials in Reading and Bilingual Education. Her experience includes training and curriculum design on many levels, along with teaching.
“Engaging Ways With Writing”
Led by Jodi Warner
In this interactive, hands-on workshop we will explore ways to encourage students to get involved with writing in your tutoring sessions. Specifically, we will look at connecting reading material to reflection and written expression. Tutors will leave with a clearer understanding of the writing process and with strategies and activities ready for their next tutorial session.
• Jodi Warner earned a Reading Specialist Credential and a Masters Degree in Education at UC Berkeley. She was a Literacy Specialist for 7 years working with inner city students struggling with reading and language arts.

Moderator – Abby Michelson Porth, Associate Director, Jewish Community Relations Council
• Ava F. Kahn, a historian of western Jewish life, served as the visiting scholar at the California Studies Center, University of California, Berkeley and has taught in the Jewish Studies programs of the University of California, Davis and San Francisco State University. Among her publications, Kahn coauthored California Jews (2003) with Marc Dollinger.
• Rita Semel works in the interfaith community on the local, national and international levels. In addition to the Interfaith Council activity, Semel is the Immediate Past Chair of the Global Council, United Religions Initiative; Vice-Chair, Board of Trustees, Graduate Theological Union. She sits on the boards of the United Way of the Bay Area and Catholic Charities, CYO. Semel is the Executive Director Emeritus of the Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco.

If you are currently tutoring students who are English Language Learners, or would like to learn more about the special literacy needs of ELL students, please join us for this absorbing workshop.
Behavior Challenges
Led by Diane Scaritt
Do you have trouble keeping your student focused and engaged? Is your student so shy that you have trouble drawing him or her out? Does your student act out during your tutoring sessions? This workshop will give you the opportunity to ask a children’s behavior expert about your specific challenges, help you identify your student’s needs, and offer practical, positive techniques for resolving your tutee’s behavior issues.
• Diane Scarritt is a licensed clinical social worker. She has served the Bayview–Hunters Point neighborhood as a therapist for 30 years and has vast experience counseling children through the age of 13 and their families, as well as collaborating and consulting with schools and other child-serving agencies. Diane is the Children, Youth and Families Coordinator for the Bayview–Hunters Point Foundation’s Mental Health Service in San Francisco.

The Children’s Book Project helps disadvantaged children learn to read by providing children and their shelters, schools, daycare and community centers with books and other resources. The Children’s Book Project has given over 1,000,000 free books to hundreds of facilities serving thousands of children throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Visit their table during the conference and grab some free books to use in your next session!
