What is required to become a tutor?

To become a JCL tutor you must complete one training and orientation session lasting 2.5 hours, and submit to a brief background check.

What does the background check entail?

• A completed volunteer information form
• Two references
• Current photo ID
• Proof of a negative TB test
• In San Francisco, fingerprints are required. Other schools and tutoring sites may require fingerprints.

How long does it take to begin working in the classroom?

This depends on the volunteer and the school - usually about 3-4 weeks. JCL must first receive all of your paperwork. Once the paperwork is complete, JCL will contact the school to find a suitable classroom placement. This process can be delayed by school vacations, testing schedules or other factors out of JCL's control.

I am a teacher - do I have to complete the JCL training?

Yes. We ask everyone to attend a JCL training session to learn about JCLs philosophy and goals. Also, you will learn how the program functions.

Can teenagers tutor?

Schools require that an adult accompany volunteers under 16 years of age. If a teenager wishes to tutor, he or she must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Both parent and teen must complete JCL training and required paperwork.

Can I choose a school and grade that I want to work with?

We will try to match you with a JCL school site and teacher that fit your needs.

What is the minimum time commitment of a volunteer?

The minimum commitment is one hour per week, for the duration of the school year. There is no maximum. Many tutors spend up to three or four hours at their school.

I would like to volunteer with JCL but I work full time. How else can I help?

First, don't assume because you work full-time that you can't tutor. You may be able to work in the morning before work, at lunchtime or tutor in an after-school program - many of these are open until 6pm. Otherwise, see our Get Involved page for ideas on how you can help promote JCL's mission.

What should I do if I am unhappy with my placement or volunteer experience?

We suggest that you try speaking first with your teacher - many problems can be resolved this way. If this does not help, please contact the JCL Program Manager in your region. We are more than happy to provide tutoring support and advice, and speak with the school on your behalf to change your placement. Just let us know.

What do I do about my scheduled vacations or if I am unable to tutor?

Let your teacher and student(s) know ahead of time if possible. If you can only give short notice, you should leave a message for your teacher with the school office.

I can't continue tutoring, what should I do?

Tell your teacher and, if possible, your student(s). Please contact JCL so we can update our records.
