Inspired by Jewish values of social justice, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) fosters literacy among disadvantaged students in public elementary schools by engaging the community as volunteer tutors.

JCL recruits, trains, places, and supports tutors in public elementary schools and after-school programs throughout the Bay Area.

JCL has a vision of creating healthy communities. The degree to which American society can ensure that all children entering the fourth grade are competent readers is probably the most significant variable in determining the health and vigor of our society.
