New Tutor Training and Workshops

New Tutor Training

All JCL volunteers complete 2.5 hours of training focused on Read Aloud and One-on-One tutoring techniques. This training has been developed to meet and exceed district and state standards. No previous tutoring experience is necessary! In addition to attending the training session, we ask that you provide a photo identification, two references and a negative TB test.

JCL tutors volunteer at schools, after-school programs and evening programs throughout San Francisco, the East Bay and the Peninsula. Potential tutors choose a site and schedule based on what is most convenient for them.

We typically hold new tutor training sessions at the start of the school year (mainly September–October), and after winter break (mainly January–February).

Workshops

In addition to our initial tutor training, JCL provides workshops year-round to build our tutors' skills. These workshops cover topics including working with kindergartners, meeting the needs of English language learners, and how to handle behavioral challenges. These workshops are free of charge and are led by highly skilled Bay Area educators.
