Seeking Bay Area Literacy Trainer(s)

Who We Are and What We Do:

Inspired by Jewish values of social justice and Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World), the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) works in concert with elementary schools throughout the Bay Area to assist students who are not yet reading at grade level. Our organization envisions a society where all children can read well and are inspired to reach their full potential. JCL trains and supports tutors from within and outside the Jewish community to work with students in their schools, engages parents through instructional workshops, and conducts book giveaways to expand home libraries.

In 2018-19, nearly 300 JCL tutors worked with 1,000 students at 55 public schools in San Francisco, the East Bay, Peninsula and Marin. Our tutors help students with language and critical-thinking skills, confidence and self-esteem. Approximately half of the students working with JCL tutors are English Language Learners. Their classroom demographics are as follows: Latinx (47%), White (16%), Asian (15%), Black (13%), Other (9%).

JCL is celebrating 20 years of high impact in the Bay Area. The JCL Literacy Trainer fuels and sustains our efforts by preparing, supporting, and inspiring JCL tutors and the populations we serve through:

  • Volunteer Tutor Trainings/Orientations

  • Tutor Tune-Ups and community-building events (addressing challenges and sharing best practices)

  • Parent Workshops to encourage reading at home (morning and evening sessions at school sites)

  • An annual Tutor Conference (professional development for tutors)

  • Curriculum development

The Role:

We are seeking dynamic, highly effective educators to collaborate with JCL staff to develop and present new curricula at the events listed above. Trainers may cover the broader region or specific areas, as needed. Periodic visits to the JCL office in San Francisco are also required. The JCL Literacy Trainer works closely with JCL Regional Program Managers, and reports to the JCL Bay Area Director.

This is an hourly, contract position for up to 40 hours/month. JCL provides reimbursement for mileage and parking.
