“When the pandemic interrupted in-person instruction, our teachers pivoted to an entirely new learning environment and JCL tutors were right there with them, maintaining their relationships with students and helping them continue learning.”
Impact on Parents
It takes a partnership between home and school to help a child learn to read. But many parents don’t know where to start. This is where JCL helps 🙌
JCL’s Literacy Trainers conduct workshops showing parents how to weave literacy-focused activities into each day and make stories lively and stimulating.
Our Philosophy
Each tutoring session is guided by the needs and interests of the child and tutor, with input from teachers and partners.
It's all about embarking on a shared learning journey with many avenues for exploring the world. Both students and tutors find immense fulfillment in their weekly encounters, delighting in progress and new discoveries.
Tutors commit to a minimum of one school year and many have been with JCL for years.
What Tutors & educators have to say
“The impact that the JCL program and tutors provide for our Title I school continues to be high. Students’ outlook on instruction, reading, orally sharing ideas etc... improve and impact their school experience daily. Teachers note the smiles and excitement on students’ faces when their tutors arrive for this special time together. It's a win-win for everyone!”
“Over the 10-plus years I have partnered with JCL, I have seen so many magical moments take place between students and tutors. The love, passion and dedication JCL tutors bring to their students is just overwhelming. JCL tutors are more than a reading tutor, they take on a role as a mentor and change the lives of the students they touch.”
“When the pandemic interrupted in-person instruction, our teachers pivoted to an entirely new learning environment and JCL tutors were right there with them, maintaining their relationships with students and helping them continue learning.”
“We were so impressed with how quickly the JCL tutors adapted their support given the school closures due to Covid-19. Our students continued to receive the connection and 1:1 reading support that they had access to before school closure, and our teachers continued to see that progress. Thank you for the flexibility and the ongoing dedication to our students!!”
JCL provides an invaluable service to our community. Through warm connection and individualized support, their tutors help students find joy and success in reading.
Covid/Zoom has thrown us lots of challenges to figure out. Your team’s help in teaching us the ins and outs of Epic, Hoopla (online reading and library platforms) & screen share on Zoom were key in having successful reading sessions. I amazed myself how much smoother I got through these months and that we were able to create a personal connection, even working remotely. Hoping the boys (I tutored) benefited; they seemed to be more confident by year-end.
You have a wonderful program and my students got so much out of it! The kids loved meeting with their 5th-grade buddies and looked forward to it each week. It was certainly one of the highlights of our school year.
“Our students are getting much-needed extra reading practice. We look at reading data regularly with teachers. We see that students often will go up in reading levels with the help of tutors.”
“I can’t say enough about how warm and rewarding the friendships with the kids are. When I go to the school to tutor a second grader a fourth or fifth grader will come over to me, give me a huge smile and a hug (pre-Covid of course), and remind me of their names. After all, when the kid is a foot taller than in the second grade I don’t necessarily remember their names because they don’t look the same. But, that they remember me tells me that they remember reading with me and getting over that hump from not really being a very strong reader to being comfortable with that.”
“I am enjoying working with my student from Fair Oaks - she has matured so much since I saw her in person last March. She was always great about reading to me and playing word games, but it when it came to conversation, she barely said hello. Now, we have conversations, it's wonderful.”
“Your presentations and discussions today were so informative, empowering, and engrossing. I’m continually amazed at how you’ve all taken on the tele-tutoring challenge and triumphed so beautifully.”
“JCL gave tutors the opportunity to become more of a community during the pandemic so we could grow personally as well as learn how to support our students. JCL also kept us connected to timely events that directly affect our students with programs on racial bias and immigration. This support helped us take on challenges and improve our tutoring skills this year.”
“The parents I communicated with are so grateful for the generosity and positive impact you have on their child's educational journey.”
