Our Impact

The hallmark of JCL’s approach is building students’ relationships with caring adults & teens by reading aloud together. We prize continuity; tutors commit for a minimum of one school year and many have been with us for years. Each tutoring session is driven by the needs and interests of the child and tutor, with input from teachers.

We help struggling young readers become confident readers excited about books and learning, and our impact is profound!

After working with a JCL tutor for one school year, most children achieve a year of reading growth! Often they advance more than one grade level! JCL students also make significant progress based on six key indicators

  • Comprehension improvement

  • Growth in language skills

  • Greater motivation to read in class

  • Reading aloud with more confidence & expression

  • Greater participation in class discussion & activities

  • More positive attitude toward school

Impact on Parents

It takes a partnership between home and school to help a child learn to read. But many parents don’t know where to start. This is where JCL helps 🙌

JCL’s Literacy Trainers conduct workshops showing parents how to weave literacy-focused activities into each day and make stories lively and stimulating.

We also give parents high-quality children’s books and other reading materials so they can read together at home, helping them instill a lifelong love of books and learning.

Our Philosophy

It's all about embarking on a shared learning journey with many avenues for exploring the world. Both students and tutors find immense fulfillment in their weekly encounters, delighting in progress and new discoveries.
